Teeth Cleanings
Maintaining a healthy smile is more than just a cosmetic concern. It’s a crucial aspect of your overall health and well-being.
You likely understand the importance of regular teeth cleaning, as it’s a key part of oral hygiene. Below, we’ll provide essential tips for teeth cleaning in Watertown, WI, such as what to expect at your appointment, how to pay for your session, and much more.
Whether you’re a local resident or someone considering moving to Watertown, this guide is for you.
Let’s dive into the world of oral health and explore the best practices for maintaining a clean and healthy smile.
The Importance of Regular Teeth Cleaning
Regular teeth cleaning is a cornerstone of oral health, and it’s not just about keeping your smile bright and attractive. Regular cleaning helps prevent dental diseases like cavities and gum disease. It also helps your dentist detect early signs of oral cancer.
Some key reasons regular teeth cleaning is essential include:
It removes plaque and tartar buildup that brushing alone can’t eliminate.
It helps prevent bad breath, a common sign of accumulated bacteria in the mouth.
Regular cleaning allows your dentist to check for signs of other health issues.
It contributes to your overall health, as poor oral health can lead to heart disease and other systemic conditions.
Remember, a clean mouth is a healthy mouth.
How Often Should You Get Professional Teeth Cleaning?
The frequency of professional teeth cleaning varies from person to person. Dentists generally recommend professional teeth cleaning every six months, as this helps maintain oral health and allows for early detection of potential issues.
However, your dentist may suggest more frequent cleanings if you have a history of gum disease or other oral health problems. Always consult your dental professional to determine the best schedule for your needs.
Daily Oral Hygiene: Best Practices at Home
Maintaining good oral hygiene at home is crucial for overall dental health.
It’s not just about brushing your teeth. A comprehensive oral care routine involves several steps.
Brush your teeth at least twice daily with fluoride and a soft-bristled toothbrush.
Floss daily. Flossing helps remove plaque and food particles between your teeth and under the gum line.
Consider using a mouthwash to help kill bacteria that brushing and flossing might miss.
Some additional tips for maintaining oral hygiene at home include:
Replace your toothbrush every three to four months — or sooner if the bristles become frayed.
Brush your tongue to remove bacteria and keep your breath fresh.
Limit sugary and acidic foods, which can cause tooth decay.
Stay hydrated. Drinking water helps wash away food particles and keeps your mouth moist.
Visit your dentist regularly for check-ups and professional cleanings.

What to Expect During a Teeth Cleaning Appointment
A teeth cleaning appointment typically begins with a physical exam of your mouth. The dentist or hygienist will check for signs of oral issues, such as gum disease or cavities.
Next, they will use a scaler to remove plaque and tartar from your teeth. This process may cause some discomfort, especially if you have sensitive gums or a lot of tartar buildup. If sensitivity is an issue, let the dentist or hygienist know so they can avoid certain areas.
After the scaling, the hygienist or dentist will polish your teeth with a high-powered electric brush and gritty toothpaste. This process helps remove any remaining tartar and gives your teeth a smooth, clean finish.
Finally, you may receive a fluoride treatment to strengthen your teeth and protect against cavities. The entire appointment usually takes about an hour.

While teeth cleaning isn’t necessarily an expensive procedure, not everyone can front the cash out of pocket. This is why Midwest Dental has payment options to fit nearly any budget.
First, if you have dental insurance, it generally covers two yearly cleanings 100%. Plus, we work with virtually all major dental insurance companies.

The Connection Between Oral Health and Overall Well-being
Oral health is not just about having a bright smile. It’s closely linked to your overall health and well-being.
Poor oral hygiene can lead to dental issues like gum disease and tooth decay, and these conditions can contribute to serious health problems like heart disease and diabetes.
So, maintaining good oral health through regular teeth cleaning is good for your mouth and your entire body.
Maintaining Oral Health Post-Cleaning
After a professional teeth cleaning, it’s crucial to maintain good oral hygiene at home. This includes brushing twice a day and flossing daily.
It’s also important to avoid foods and drinks that can stain your teeth, especially in the first 24 hours after cleaning. Some items to avoid include coffee, tea, and red wine.
Remember, regular dental checkups and cleanings are key to preventing dental issues and maintaining a healthy smile.
Common Misconceptions About Teeth Cleaning
Several misconceptions about teeth cleaning exist. One common myth is that teeth cleaning is optional if you brush and floss regularly. However, professional cleanings can remove plaque and tartar that regular brushing and flossing can’t.
Another misconception is that teeth cleaning can weaken your teeth. Cleaning strengthens your teeth by removing harmful bacteria and preventing decay.
Some people also believe teeth cleaning is painful. While some discomfort may occur, modern dental techniques and tools have made the process much more comfortable.
Remember, understanding the facts about teeth cleaning in Watertown, WI can help you make informed decisions about your oral health.

They've been taking good care of me for years now. They have friendly staff who make me feel at ease in their office, and I appreciate that they don't try to push an upsell of services that I really am just not interested in. They take care of my teeth, which is exactly what I want them to do.

The staff at Midwest Dental are awesome from the moment I walk in until the moment I leave. Melissa is incredibly kind, attentive, understanding and gentle. For me it takes my dental experience to a higher level. Everyone there is welcoming and friendly. I think the new Dr is a great addition to this office. Before he was added to the staff, I was a bit unsure as I am fairly new there. The front office as well are very kind and attentive people. Thank you!

I have had a really good experience here with Dr. Joe and Jill. Years of dental neglect and avoiding the dentist finally caught up to me in December one evening when my disintegrating canine tooth abscessed and the right half of my face swelled up. Dr. Joe and Jill were able to squeeze me in and see me the next morning. They did a quick exam of all my teeth, they briefed me on the terrible shape my teeth were in, and they answered all my questions about the abscess. They were patient with me and very informative, especially since I had not been to a dentist in probably ten years. Jill walked me through, step-by-step, exactly what I needed to do to set up the oral surgery appointment in Johnson Creek to get my abscessed tooth pulled, which I really appreciated. I have had a handful of dental visits with Dr. Joe and Jill since then, and we have been working on fixing the rest of my teeth. ✨
