Understanding Sedation Dentistry
Sedation dentistry, also known as “sleep dentistry,” uses sedatives to create a relaxed, easy, and calm state. It’s a solution for those who dread dental visits due to anxiety or fear.
Sedation can be administered in several ways, including oral sedation, intravenous (IV) sedation, and nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”). Each type of sedation serves a unique purpose and is used based on the patient’s needs and the nature of the dental procedure.
Some key points to understand about sedation dentistry include:
It’s used to manage patient’s fear and anxiety during dental procedures.
Sedation is safe when administered by qualified professionals.
It’s different from anesthesia, which causes a total loss of consciousness.
Patients under sedation are usually awake and can respond to commands, but feel relaxed and may not remember much about the procedure.
Types of Sedation Dentistry
You’ll find various types of sedation dentistry near you. Each option caters to different needs, levels of anxiety, and types of dental procedures.
The three main types of sedation dentistry are:
Oral Sedation
IV Sedation
Pediatric Sedation
Each type has its unique benefits and considerations.
Let’s examine each one so you can understand them better.
Oral Sedation Dentistry
Oral sedation is a popular choice for many patients. It involves taking a prescribed dose of sedative orally before the procedure.
This type of sedation can range from minimal to moderate, depending on the dose. When you opt for oral sedation dentistry near you, you can remain awake but feel relaxed and drowsy.
IV Sedation Dentistry
IV sedation involves administering the sedative directly into the bloodstream through an IV. This method allows for a deeper level of sedation, takes effect quickly, and is typically reserved for more complex or lengthy procedures.
The dentist can continually adjust the level of sedation as needed, so you can rest assured IV sedation near you is safe and effective.
Pediatric Sedation Dentistry
Pediatric sedation dentistry is designed specifically for children. It helps to calm children who are fearful or anxious about dental procedures. This method ensures a comfortable and stress-free experience for the child and the parent.
It’s safe when administered by a dentist trained in pediatric sedation near you.
The Benefits of Sedation Dentistry
Sedation dentistry offers numerous benefits, making dental procedures more comfortable and less stressful. For many, it’s a game-changer that allows them to maintain their oral health without fear or anxiety.
Some key benefits of sedation dentistry include:
Reduces anxiety and fear: Sedation dentistry can help patients with dental phobia to relax during procedures.
Minimizes discomfort: Sedation dentistry can make lengthy or complex procedures more comfortable.
Improves efficiency: With sedation dentistry near you, dentists can often perform multiple procedures in one visit.
Enhances recovery: Patients often have less negative memories of the procedure, leading to a more positive overall experience.
In essence, sedation dentistry can significantly improve the quality of dental care. It allows patients to receive the necessary treatments without the associated stress or discomfort.
This makes it an excellent option for those who dread dental visits or have a low pain threshold.
How to Choose a Sedation Dentist
Choosing the right sedation dentist near you is crucial for a positive experience.
First, ensure the dentist is certified and experienced in administering sedation. They should have undergone specific training and adhere to state and local regulatory standards.
Second, consider the dentist’s approach to patient care. They should offer a personalized approach, taking into account your health history, medications, and personal comfort. A good sedation dentist will prioritize patient education, trust, and communication.
Preparing for Your Sedation Dentistry Appointment
Preparation is key for a successful sedation dentistry appointment. Your dentist will provide specific instructions based on the type of sedation used.
Typically, your dentist may ask you to fast for a certain period before the procedure. It’s also important to arrange for a responsible adult to accompany you, as you may be drowsy or disoriented post-procedure. Plus, they will need to drive you home from the procedure.
Sedation Dentistry Cost and Insurance Considerations
Sedation dentistry cost can vary depending on the type of sedation used and the complexity of the dental procedure.
Some dental insurance plans may cover sedation dentistry, especially if it’s deemed medically necessary. It’s advisable to check with your insurance provider for specifics.
Remember, investing in sedation dentistry can lead to long-term benefits. It can make necessary dental procedures more comfortable, reduce anxiety, and allow for improved overall dental health.
What to Expect After Sedation Dentistry
After sedation dentistry, you may feel groggy. This is a normal side effect of the sedation.
It’s important to have a responsible adult accompany you home and help monitor your recovery for the rest of the day.

I've only been here twice but both times it was absolutely wonderful. All of the staff has been incredibly pleasant and accomodating. The building is clean and minimal and not uncomfortably fancy (which is a plus imo after my experience with my last "spa-like" dentist). The prices are very reasonable and they do really good work and want to make sure you're comfortable the whole time. I've had a cleaned done and two cavities filled and it was about as painless and stress-free as a dentist trip can be. They offer sedation dentistry which I was considering for my cavity fillings but honestly, I found that I didn't need it. Would absolutely recommend
Highly recommend this office! I have been going to Dr Ken for years and I fully trust his judgement and work! He is patient, kind and knowledgeable. This fall my son needed multiple fillings and we decided sedation was the best option. Dr. Reiter met with us for a consultation and eased our worries away. Dr. Reiter called us the night before his sedation to see if we had any additional questions or concerns. Irina and Dr. Reiter took great care of my son during the sedation. Dr. Ken did amazing work on him, his teeth look great and we have had no issues with the fillings. Both Dr. Ken and Dr. Reiter called us later that evening to check up on my son and see how he was recovering. Very friendly staff from the front office to the assistances and hygienists.
I have never had a better experience at a dental office then I have here. I'm absolutely terrified of the dentist and am very particular about where I go. I wanted a female dentist who provided sedation dentistry and Midwest dental had both. She was very gentle and never rushed me through anything. She explained everything to me and made sure I was comfortable. I currently breastfeed my child and she accommodated my requests. I had to have an extraction done and i felt nothing. The only thing I felt was the novacaine and that barely hurt. I will never go anywhere else. I couldn't ask for a better experience.
