Whether you’re a local resident or someone considering moving to , this guide is for you.
Let’s dive into the world of oral health and explore the best practices for maintaining a clean and healthy smile.
The Importance of Regular Teeth Cleaning
Regular teeth cleaning is a cornerstone of oral health, and it’s not just about keeping your smile bright and attractive. Regular cleaning helps prevent dental diseases like cavities and gum disease. It also helps your dentist detect early signs of oral cancer.
Some key reasons regular teeth cleaning is essential include:
It removes plaque and tartar buildup that brushing alone can’t eliminate.
It helps prevent bad breath, a common sign of accumulated bacteria in the mouth.
Regular cleaning allows your dentist to check for signs of other health issues.
It contributes to your overall health, as poor oral health can lead to heart disease and other systemic conditions.
Remember, a clean mouth is a healthy mouth.
How Often Should You Get Professional Teeth Cleaning?
The frequency of professional teeth cleaning varies from person to person. Dentists generally recommend professional teeth cleaning every six months, as this helps maintain oral health and allows for early detection of potential issues.
However, your dentist may suggest more frequent cleanings if you have a history of gum disease or other oral health problems. Always consult your dental professional to determine the best schedule for your needs.
Daily Oral Hygiene: Best Practices at Home
Maintaining good oral hygiene at home is crucial for overall dental health.
It’s not just about brushing your teeth. A comprehensive oral care routine involves several steps.
Brush your teeth at least twice daily with fluoride and a soft-bristled toothbrush.
Floss daily. Flossing helps remove plaque and food particles between your teeth and under the gum line.
Consider using a mouthwash to help kill bacteria that brushing and flossing might miss.
Some additional tips for maintaining oral hygiene at home include:
Replace your toothbrush every three to four months — or sooner if the bristles become frayed.
Brush your tongue to remove bacteria and keep your breath fresh.
Limit sugary and acidic foods, which can cause tooth decay.
Stay hydrated. Drinking water helps wash away food particles and keeps your mouth moist.
Visit your dentist regularly for check-ups and professional cleanings.
Choosing the Right Dental Clinic
Choosing the right dental clinic is important to maintaining oral health. , you have several options to consider.
Look for a clinic that offers comprehensive services, including routine check-ups, cleanings, and emergency care, so you know they can handle anything that pops up. It is also important to find a clinic with experienced and friendly staff who can make your visits comfortable.
Lastly, consider the clinic’s location and hours. A conveniently located clinic with flexible hours can make scheduling your regular teeth cleanings and other dental appointments easier.
Fortunately, you’ve already found Midwest Dental, the premier dentist office for your teeth cleaning needs.
What to Expect During a Teeth Cleaning Appointment
A teeth cleaning appointment typically begins with a physical exam of your mouth. The dentist or hygienist will check for signs of oral issues, such as gum disease or cavities.
Next, they will use a scaler to remove plaque and tartar from your teeth. This process may cause some discomfort, especially if you have sensitive gums or a lot of tartar buildup. If sensitivity is an issue, let the dentist or hygienist know so they can avoid certain areas.
After the scaling, the hygienist or dentist will polish your teeth with a high-powered electric brush and gritty toothpaste. This process helps remove any remaining tartar and gives your teeth a smooth, clean finish.
Finally, you may receive a fluoride treatment to strengthen your teeth and protect against cavities. The entire appointment usually takes about an hour.
Affordable Teeth Cleaning
While teeth cleaning isn’t necessarily an expensive procedure, not everyone can front the cash out of pocket. This is why Midwest Dental has payment options to fit nearly any budget.
First, if you have dental insurance, it generally covers two yearly cleanings 100%. Plus, we work with virtually all major dental insurance companies.
If you lack insurance, we have options to fit you, too. First, we accept all major credit cards and Care Credit. If those aren’t an option, Midwest Dental offers in-house dental financing that allows you to pay for your teeth cleaning in several installments.
Finally, Midwest Dental also offers its Essential Smile Plan, which reduces the cost of select dental procedures by 20-40% and offers some procedures for free.
The Connection Between Oral Health and Overall Well-being
Oral health is not just about having a bright smile. It’s closely linked to your overall health and well-being.
Poor oral hygiene can lead to dental issues like gum disease and tooth decay, and these conditions can contribute to serious health problems like heart disease and diabetes.
So, maintaining good oral health through regular teeth cleaning is good for your mouth and your entire body.
Maintaining Oral Health Post-Cleaning
After a professional teeth cleaning, it’s crucial to maintain good oral hygiene at home. This includes brushing twice a day and flossing daily.
It’s also important to avoid foods and drinks that can stain your teeth, especially in the first 24 hours after cleaning. Some items to avoid include coffee, tea, and red wine.
Remember, regular dental checkups and cleanings are key to preventing dental issues and maintaining a healthy smile.
Common Misconceptions About Teeth Cleaning
Several misconceptions about teeth cleaning exist. One common myth is that teeth cleaning is optional if you brush and floss regularly. However, professional cleanings can remove plaque and tartar that regular brushing and flossing can’t.
Another misconception is that teeth cleaning can weaken your teeth. Cleaning strengthens your teeth by removing harmful bacteria and preventing decay.
Some people also believe teeth cleaning is painful. While some discomfort may occur, modern dental techniques and tools have made the process much more comfortable.
Remember, understanding the facts about teeth cleaning can help you make informed decisions about your oral health.

Great experience during my visit. The team was very welcoming and caring. I was especially glad to meet one of the permanent dentists, Dr. Zoma. The experience was completely pain-free and very comfortable. She gave me time to take breaks in between, especially because I have a small mouth and a gag reflex, and she was very patient with me. Her assistant—sorry I forgot her name—was also very caring and gentle.
I was also impressed by the permanent hygienist, Kris, during my first visit; she did an amazing job cleaning my teeth. I will definitely be coming back.

I moved to Lindstrom 4 years ago and have been going to Midwest Dental for the past three years. The entire staff there is amazing. From the courteous smiles and greetings when you walk in, to the warm wishes when you leave, they make you feel welcome and that you matter. They have helped me with cleanings and crowns and fillings and bridges, and I couldn't be happier with the results. Everyone there is amazing and Dr Riley is one of the best Dentists I have ever seen. He explains options and processes to help you make the right choices, and on more than one occasion they have "squeezed" me in for an emergency visit. They are always very transparent in their pricing, and they work with the insurance company to assure I get the best benefits. Thank you, Midwest Dental - Chisago City!
