Dental Crowns
Choosing the right dentist who performs dental crowns near you requires a lot of research. With numerous dental offices to choose from and all the different types of dental crowns in Cedar Falls, IA, it’s essential to make an informed decision.
Dental crowns play a crucial role in restoring damaged teeth. They can improve the function and appearance of your teeth, but how do you know which dentist and crown type is right for you?
Below, we’ll provide you with the necessary information to make these important decisions about your dental health. We’ll explore what a dental crown is, the different types available, their respective costs, and how to find the right dental crown dentist in Cedar Falls, IA.
What is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is a common dental procedure, but what is it exactly?
A dental crown is a cap that covers a damaged tooth and restores its shape, size, and strength. The crown fully encases the visible portion of the tooth and is cemented into place, providing a stable and durable solution for damaged teeth.
Dental crowns come in various materials, including porcelain, ceramic, metal, and composite resin. Each material has pros and cons. The choice often depends on the patient’s specific needs and preferences.
What’s a Dental Crown’s Role in Oral Health?
Dental crowns play a significant role in oral health, as they’re a solution for damaged or decayed teeth.
By covering the damaged tooth, a crown can prevent further decay. It can also protect the tooth from breakage. Dental crowns can also restore the function of the tooth. They allow for normal eating and speaking.
Additionally, crowns can improve the appearance of the tooth by covering up discoloration and misshapenness, enhancing your smile.
What Are the Types of Dental Crowns in Cedar Falls, IA
Several types of dental crowns are available. The type you choose can depend on various factors, such as the tooth’s location, the color of the surrounding teeth, and the patient’s personal preference.
The most common types of dental crowns are made from the following materials:
Composite resin dental crowns: Composite crowns are great on a budget and can match your natural tooth color. However, they are the most fragile of all dental crowns in Cedar Falls, IA.
Ceramic dental crowns: These crowns are the most economical of the group and are easy for your dentist to match with your natural tooth color. The downside is they are not as durable as other materials.
Porcelain dental crowns: Porcelain crowns or porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns can also match your natural teeth. Their big draw is that they are much more durable than ceramic crowns because they combine the great look of porcelain laid on top of metal. The downside is they are pricier than ceramic and may show a metal line near their base if your gums recede.
Metal dental crowns: These are made from gold, palladium, nickel, and chromium. While their color stands out, making them best suited outside your smile line, they offer great durability, making them excellent options for molars.
Your Midwest Dental dentist near you can help you determine which crown material and best for your situation and budget..
The Process of Getting a Dental Crown in Cedar Falls, IA
Getting a dental crown in Cedar Falls, IA involves several steps. The process begins with a consultation with a Midwest Dental dental professional so they can examine your teeth and determine if a dental crown is the best solution for you.
If the dentist recommends a dental crown, they will discuss the different types of crowns and help you choose the best material for your specific needs. The next step is the dental crown procedure itself. This involves preparing the tooth, taking impressions, and fitting the crown. After the procedure, proper aftercare and maintenance are crucial to ensure the longevity of your dental crown.
Consultation and Treatment Planning
The consultation is an important part of the process. It allows the dentist to assess your oral health, discuss your treatment options, and review the pros and cons of each type of dental crown.
The dentist will also provide a treatment plan, which outlines the steps involved in getting a dental crown.
The Dental Crown Procedure
Getting a dental crown in Cedar Falls, IA usually involves two visits. The first visit is for tooth preparation and impression taking. During this visit, the dentist will reshape the tooth to make room for the crown and then then take an impression of the reshapened tooth.
The dentist sends the impression to a dental lab, which uses it to create a custom crown. The dentist will install a temporary crown to protect your tooth while waiting for the permanent crown to come from the lab.
During the second visit, the dentist will remove the temporary crown and fit and cement the permanent crown. They will ensure it fits properly and matches your other teeth.
Dental Crown Aftercare and Maintenance
After getting a dental crown, proper care is essential, including regular brushing and flossing. It’s also important to avoid hard foods, as these can damage the crown. Regular dental checkups are also crucial. These allow the dentist to monitor the condition of the crown and make any necessary adjustments.
Cost and Insurance Considerations for Dental Crowns in Cedar Falls, IA
The cost of dental crowns near you, can vary based on several factors, including the type of crown and the dentist’s expertise. It’s important to get a detailed cost estimate before the procedure so you can plan your budget accordingly.
Understanding the Cost of Dental Crown Near You
The cost of a dental crown in Cedar Falls, IA can range from several hundred to a few thousand dollars. The material of the crown is a major factor in the cost. Additional necessary procedures, like root canals, can also affect the cost. It’s important to discuss these potential costs with your dentist.
Remember, the cheapest option may not always be the best. Consider the longevity and quality of the crown when evaluating cost.

I had a problem with a cap on one of my teeth from a previous dentist… and of course it fell off a week before I traveled to France for a month. Midwest was so great at getting me in, rushing to get the crown in on time, and getting it done before I left. It was such a relief for me, and really shows the character of the office and how they are there to help. Great team, great office.
I was very disappointed with my previous dentists and decided to try this office. I cannot express enough how great this practice is! They are all so upbeat and kind. I had a temporary crown put on at Christmas time and it came off. We found glue and tried to fix the problem. I had pain in my mouth I had never experienced and Dr. was on vacation for the week. I came into the office to make an appointment ASAP and Kim actually called Dr. Spencer to talk to him and next thing I know he is coming in to see me on his vacation! Nowhere do you get that kind of service!!
My husband and I have been coming here for about a year. It had been a few years since either of us had been to the dentist. At no point were we shamed about that; they have just helped us get back on track. At my appointment today, I was told that there has been tremendous improvement in my gums since my last appointment. Yay! My husband has needed serious dental planing and 2 crowns so far. The work he's had done is beautiful! There is still plenty more to do in there, but we know he's in good hands. The Dr. is very knowledgeable and very good at what he does. Kim, in the front office, is a gem. Every time we're here, I feel like I'm visiting a friend.
Midwest Dental and Dr. Spencer Walker are my choice for an excellent and efficient dental experience. He’s speedy to get into and follow up with friendly and, very important to me, rarely causes any discomfort. I’ve had crown after crown and several root canals.
I’d give Dr. Walker 10 stars if I could. If anyone has had dental anxiety in the past at other providers, I highly suggest you see Dr. Walker at Midwest Dental in Cedar Falls. I have had issues with getting numb before dental procedures for many years and other providers always blew me off. When you have to go though a crown and root canal with dental anesthetic not working, it’s kind of a big deal. Dr. Walker figured out why this was happening and was able to get me numb with no problems for my crown. It appears that I have a rare nerve anatomy and Dr. Walker discovered it. I can’t thank you enough for listening to my concerns and figuring out what the issue was. Everyone at this dental office is professional and very nice. Kim at the front desk is always very helpful with any questions that I have and Diane is a super great hygienist!
I have been with the dentist about a year now, and beside the regular check up, I had a broken tooth that 'received' a crown (a dental crown) few months ago. The whole experience has been great, and one of the aspect that I liked is that I got a detailed -out of pocket- expenses that I needed. I believe that most of the dental plan has a cap in any type of work, and knowing upfront what I need to have was very helpful to plan myself. I totally agree with other reviewer that the staff is very capable and nice.
I was in town on business and cracked a tooth in half. I went down the list of dentists near me and they were the ONLY ones to fit me in for an emergency appointment.
I then explained that I needed a fix that would last at least a week as i was travelling more after i left Cedar Falls. They kept me longer, ordered me a crown and got it installed the next day without hesitation.
The caring and professionalism shown by both the Doctor and his staff is unparalleled and I will go back in a heartbeat if i ever have a dental need in Cedar Falls.
