Understanding Gum Disease and its Impact
Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is an infection of the tissues that hold your teeth in place. It’s typically caused by poor brushing and flossing habits that allow plaque—a sticky film of bacteria—to build up on the teeth and harden.
In its early stage, called gingivitis, gum disease causes the gums to become red and swollen, and they may bleed. At this stage, the disease is still reversible and can usually be eliminated by a professional cleaning at your local Midwest Dental office and regular brushing and flossing.
Advanced gum disease, known as periodontitis, can lead to sore, bleeding gums; painful chewing problems; and even tooth loss. The body’s immune system fights the bacteria as the plaque spreads and grows below the gum line.
Some key points to remember about gum disease are:
It’s a progressive condition that can lead to tooth loss if untreated.
Early detection and treatment can prevent serious complications.
Good oral hygiene practices can help prevent gum disease.
Regular dental checkups are crucial for early detection and treatment.
Recognizing the Symptoms of Gum Disease
Gum disease often progresses silently, with few or no symptoms in the early stages. However, as the disease advances, it can manifest in various ways.
Swollen, tender, or red gums are common symptoms of gum disease and are often the first signs. Bleeding during brushing or flossing is another common symptom, and it is usually a sign of inflammation from plaque buildup.
Persistent bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth can also indicate gum disease. This is due to the bacteria and decaying food particles present.
Some key symptoms of gum disease to watch out for include:
Swollen, tender, or red gums
Bleeding during brushing or flossing
Persistent bad breath or bad taste
Receding gums or longer-appearing teeth
Loose or shifting teeth
Changes in the way your teeth fit together when you bite
Changes in the fit of partial dentures
Traditional Periodontal Treatments in Danville, IL
Traditional periodontal treatments are widely used in Danville, IL. These treatments aim to control the infection and restore gum health.
One common method is scaling and root planing, which are deep-cleaning procedures that remove plaque and tartar from below the gum line.
Another traditional treatment is flap surgery. This involves lifting the gums back to remove tartar. The gums are then sutured back in place to fit closely to the teeth.
Your dentist may also prescribe antibiotics in conjunction with these treatments. They help to reduce the bacteria causing the infection.
The Advantages of Laser Treatment for Gum Disease
Laser treatment for gum disease in Danville, IL is gaining popularity. This modern approach offers several advantages over traditional methods.
First, laser treatment is less invasive. It targets and removes only the diseased tissue, leaving healthy gums intact.
Second, it promotes faster healing. The laser’s precision reduces trauma to the gums, leading to less swelling and discomfort.
Some additional benefits of laser treatment include:
Reduced risk of infection
Less bleeding during and after treatment
Shorter treatment time
Fewer visits to the dentist
Choosing laser treatment for gum disease near you can lead to a more comfortable and efficient healing process. It’s a worthwhile option for treating gum disease near you.
The Cost of Gum Disease Treatment in Danville, IL
The cost of gum disease treatment near you can vary depending on several factors.
The severity of the disease is a major determinant. More advanced cases may require more extensive treatment, thus increasing the cost.
The type of treatment chosen also influences the cost. For instance, laser treatment might be more expensive than traditional methods.
Some other factors that can affect the cost:
The dentist’s experience and expertise
The use of advanced technology
The need for additional procedures
Despite the cost, addressing gum disease is crucial. It’s an investment in your oral health and overall well-being.

Preventive Measures and Maintaining Oral Health Post-Treatment
Preventive measures are crucial in maintaining oral health post-treatment. Regular brushing and flossing are the first steps.
Brush at least twice a day using a soft-bristle toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Floss daily to remove plaque from between teeth — an area often missed during brushing.
Consider using interdental brushes or water flossers, as they can be more effective in cleaning between teeth and along the gum line.
Regular professional dental cleanings are also important. They can help remove hardened plaque, known as tartar, that you can’t remove at home.
Lastly, maintain a healthy diet. Foods rich in vitamins and minerals can support gum health. Avoid sugary foods and drinks that can lead to plaque buildup.
The Role of Lifestyle Changes in Managing Gum Disease
Lifestyle changes can significantly impact gum health. Smoking, for instance, is a major risk factor for gum disease. Quitting smoking can improve oral health and enhance the effectiveness of gum disease treatment.
A balanced diet is also crucial. Foods rich in antioxidants, such as fruits and vegetables, can boost gum health.

My dentist had retired and I was referred to champagne. That dentist referred me to another dentist in Champaign . Each referral they took x-rays and collected payment. I had been in pain willing to pay cash. Finally, after calling all around, Midwest Dental had a travel dentist and being a travel nurse I knew I would be in good hands! He explained everything was extremely gentle and without hesitation, met my needs and pulled the tooth. He was the fifth dentist! Needless to say, I am ecstatic and highly recommend Midwest dental. Thank you for not taking x-rays and referring me. I am so grateful to be out of pain and able to be back to work!
All of the staff Exceeded expectations!!!!
