Teeth Cleanings
Maintaining a healthy smile is more than just a cosmetic concern. It’s a crucial aspect of your overall health and well-being.
You likely understand the importance of regular teeth cleaning, as it’s a key part of oral hygiene. Below, we’ll provide essential tips for teeth cleaning in La Crosse, WI, such as what to expect at your appointment, how to pay for your session, and much more.
Whether you’re a local resident or someone considering moving to La Crosse, this guide is for you.
Let’s dive into the world of oral health and explore the best practices for maintaining a clean and healthy smile.
The Importance of Regular Teeth Cleaning
Regular teeth cleaning is a cornerstone of oral health, and it’s not just about keeping your smile bright and attractive. Regular cleaning helps prevent dental diseases like cavities and gum disease. It also helps your dentist detect early signs of oral cancer.
Some key reasons regular teeth cleaning is essential include:
It removes plaque and tartar buildup that brushing alone can’t eliminate.
It helps prevent bad breath, a common sign of accumulated bacteria in the mouth.
Regular cleaning allows your dentist to check for signs of other health issues.
It contributes to your overall health, as poor oral health can lead to heart disease and other systemic conditions.
Remember, a clean mouth is a healthy mouth.
How Often Should You Get Professional Teeth Cleaning?
The frequency of professional teeth cleaning varies from person to person. Dentists generally recommend professional teeth cleaning every six months, as this helps maintain oral health and allows for early detection of potential issues.
However, your dentist may suggest more frequent cleanings if you have a history of gum disease or other oral health problems. Always consult your dental professional to determine the best schedule for your needs.
Daily Oral Hygiene: Best Practices at Home
Maintaining good oral hygiene at home is crucial for overall dental health.
It’s not just about brushing your teeth. A comprehensive oral care routine involves several steps.
Brush your teeth at least twice daily with fluoride and a soft-bristled toothbrush.
Floss daily. Flossing helps remove plaque and food particles between your teeth and under the gum line.
Consider using a mouthwash to help kill bacteria that brushing and flossing might miss.
Some additional tips for maintaining oral hygiene at home include:
Replace your toothbrush every three to four months — or sooner if the bristles become frayed.
Brush your tongue to remove bacteria and keep your breath fresh.
Limit sugary and acidic foods, which can cause tooth decay.
Stay hydrated. Drinking water helps wash away food particles and keeps your mouth moist.
Visit your dentist regularly for check-ups and professional cleanings.

What to Expect During a Teeth Cleaning Appointment
A teeth cleaning appointment typically begins with a physical exam of your mouth. The dentist or hygienist will check for signs of oral issues, such as gum disease or cavities.
Next, they will use a scaler to remove plaque and tartar from your teeth. This process may cause some discomfort, especially if you have sensitive gums or a lot of tartar buildup. If sensitivity is an issue, let the dentist or hygienist know so they can avoid certain areas.
After the scaling, the hygienist or dentist will polish your teeth with a high-powered electric brush and gritty toothpaste. This process helps remove any remaining tartar and gives your teeth a smooth, clean finish.
Finally, you may receive a fluoride treatment to strengthen your teeth and protect against cavities. The entire appointment usually takes about an hour.
Affordable Teeth Cleaning in La Crosse, WI
While teeth cleaning isn’t necessarily an expensive procedure, not everyone can front the cash out of pocket. This is why Midwest Dental has payment options to fit nearly any budget.

The Connection Between Oral Health and Overall Well-being
Oral health is not just about having a bright smile. It’s closely linked to your overall health and well-being.
Poor oral hygiene can lead to dental issues like gum disease and tooth decay, and these conditions can contribute to serious health problems like heart disease and diabetes.
So, maintaining good oral health through regular teeth cleaning is good for your mouth and your entire body.
Maintaining Oral Health Post-Cleaning
After a professional teeth cleaning, it’s crucial to maintain good oral hygiene at home. This includes brushing twice a day and flossing daily.
It’s also important to avoid foods and drinks that can stain your teeth, especially in the first 24 hours after cleaning. Some items to avoid include coffee, tea, and red wine.
Remember, regular dental checkups and cleanings are key to preventing dental issues and maintaining a healthy smile.
Common Misconceptions About Teeth Cleaning
Several misconceptions about teeth cleaning exist. One common myth is that teeth cleaning is optional if you brush and floss regularly. However, professional cleanings can remove plaque and tartar that regular brushing and flossing can’t.
Another misconception is that teeth cleaning can weaken your teeth. Cleaning strengthens your teeth by removing harmful bacteria and preventing decay.
Some people also believe teeth cleaning is painful. While some discomfort may occur, modern dental techniques and tools have made the process much more comfortable.
Remember, understanding the facts about teeth cleaning in La Crosse, WI can help you make informed decisions about your oral health.

I have had nothing but a good experience at the Copeland Ave. office. Jules is an excellent dental hygienist who is gentle yet thorough with cleanings. She’s smart and friendly and never has any issues answering any of my questions, which has changed the way I view going to the dentist. Dr. McEldowney is also very nice and thorough with exams. I never have any issue scheduling my next 6 month appointment because of how professional the care is here.

I have been going to Midwest Dental for a few years now and they have been nothing but pleasant. Recently, my fiancé had to go in for something more serious and this was his first trip to the dentist in a long time. They made him feel very comfortable with being there! Enough so that he’s done putting off his cleanings and plans to go twice a year. Thanks, Midwest Dental, for making everything easy going!
My first visit to a dentist here in LaCrosse since we moved here from Oregon in Sept we shop at festival foods and I saw Midwest Dental right there so I stopped in and made an appointment everyone was very friendly with getting my new patients paperwork done. My first appt was cleaning and checkup and all went very well i really sorry I don't know my hygienist name but she was very friendly and we chatted quite a bit when Dr. Stull came in he went over my X-rays and checked my teeth and gave me a full report of what I needed to do to keep my mouth healthy but he was not pushy and I walked out of office with quotes of what my out of pocket would be for suggestions he made which I was very happy with. When i got home I told of husband make that dental appointment at Midwest and he did. Glad my first choice to make Midweat Detntal and Dr Stull our dentist was successful. I would highly recommend Midwest Dental
The staff is friendly, professional, thorough. Dr. Stull - friendly, accommodating, skilled. We happened upon this dental office on accident - literally. My son broke 2 of his front teeth on a Friday afternoon and while in the emergency room, we had to see a dentist next... our insurance had changed and called this facility and prayed. Dr. Stull said to bring him in and we'll fit him in. Not only was he accommodating in an emergency situation on a Friday afternoon, he was compassionate, kind and did a fantastic job. He gained a family of fives business that day. :) He also works with our orthodontist and they don't "double up" on xrays if needed for our kids. Today, three of us had cleanings and I called them this am (these appts are scheduled 6 months out) and said, my boys have baseball tonight and we need to be out by this time... Went in, got our cleanings, they knew of our other commitments and took care of business. For those with kids - I haven't seen this advertised as a pediatric office, but the waiting area has puppets, books, tv and the staff is friendly and courteous. My kids are elem/MS age and they are comfortable there. :)
Extremely friendly staff. I appreciated the day of my cleaning that I was informed there wasn't a dentist there. i didn't need a dentist and I was fully confident in the cleaning I was going to receive, but if I would have had issue with that, I would have known. Only downfall is that like any other business they try to sell you extras. I am offered a fluoride treatment, but was not informed that this is not covered by insurance. Now that I know I can make the decision if I want this or not. Overall they are probably the best dentist I have been to and unfortunately I have been to a lot.
