Teeth Cleanings
Maintaining a healthy smile is more than just a cosmetic concern. It’s a crucial aspect of your overall health and well-being.
You likely understand the importance of regular teeth cleaning, as it’s a key part of oral hygiene. Below, we’ll provide essential tips for teeth cleaning in Oshkosh, WI, such as what to expect at your appointment, how to pay for your session, and much more.
Whether you’re a local resident or someone considering moving to Oshkosh, this guide is for you.
Let’s dive into the world of oral health and explore the best practices for maintaining a clean and healthy smile.
The Importance of Regular Teeth Cleaning
Regular teeth cleaning is a cornerstone of oral health, and it’s not just about keeping your smile bright and attractive. Regular cleaning helps prevent dental diseases like cavities and gum disease. It also helps your dentist detect early signs of oral cancer.
Some key reasons regular teeth cleaning is essential include:
It removes plaque and tartar buildup that brushing alone can’t eliminate.
It helps prevent bad breath, a common sign of accumulated bacteria in the mouth.
Regular cleaning allows your dentist to check for signs of other health issues.
It contributes to your overall health, as poor oral health can lead to heart disease and other systemic conditions.
Remember, a clean mouth is a healthy mouth.
How Often Should You Get Professional Teeth Cleaning?
The frequency of professional teeth cleaning varies from person to person. Dentists generally recommend professional teeth cleaning every six months, as this helps maintain oral health and allows for early detection of potential issues.
However, your dentist may suggest more frequent cleanings if you have a history of gum disease or other oral health problems. Always consult your dental professional to determine the best schedule for your needs.
Daily Oral Hygiene: Best Practices at Home
Maintaining good oral hygiene at home is crucial for overall dental health.
It’s not just about brushing your teeth. A comprehensive oral care routine involves several steps.
Brush your teeth at least twice daily with fluoride and a soft-bristled toothbrush.
Floss daily. Flossing helps remove plaque and food particles between your teeth and under the gum line.
Consider using a mouthwash to help kill bacteria that brushing and flossing might miss.
Some additional tips for maintaining oral hygiene at home include:
Replace your toothbrush every three to four months — or sooner if the bristles become frayed.
Brush your tongue to remove bacteria and keep your breath fresh.
Limit sugary and acidic foods, which can cause tooth decay.
Stay hydrated. Drinking water helps wash away food particles and keeps your mouth moist.
Visit your dentist regularly for check-ups and professional cleanings.

What to Expect During a Teeth Cleaning Appointment
A teeth cleaning appointment typically begins with a physical exam of your mouth. The dentist or hygienist will check for signs of oral issues, such as gum disease or cavities.
Next, they will use a scaler to remove plaque and tartar from your teeth. This process may cause some discomfort, especially if you have sensitive gums or a lot of tartar buildup. If sensitivity is an issue, let the dentist or hygienist know so they can avoid certain areas.
After the scaling, the hygienist or dentist will polish your teeth with a high-powered electric brush and gritty toothpaste. This process helps remove any remaining tartar and gives your teeth a smooth, clean finish.
Finally, you may receive a fluoride treatment to strengthen your teeth and protect against cavities. The entire appointment usually takes about an hour.
Affordable Teeth Cleaning in Oshkosh, WI
While teeth cleaning isn’t necessarily an expensive procedure, not everyone can front the cash out of pocket. This is why Midwest Dental has payment options to fit nearly any budget.
First, if you have dental insurance, it generally covers two yearly cleanings 100%. Plus, we work with virtually all major dental insurance companies.

Finally, Midwest Dental also offers its Essential Smile Plan, which reduces the cost of select dental procedures by 20-40% and offers some procedures for free.
The Connection Between Oral Health and Overall Well-being
Oral health is not just about having a bright smile. It’s closely linked to your overall health and well-being.
Poor oral hygiene can lead to dental issues like gum disease and tooth decay, and these conditions can contribute to serious health problems like heart disease and diabetes.
So, maintaining good oral health through regular teeth cleaning is good for your mouth and your entire body.
Maintaining Oral Health Post-Cleaning
After a professional teeth cleaning, it’s crucial to maintain good oral hygiene at home. This includes brushing twice a day and flossing daily.
It’s also important to avoid foods and drinks that can stain your teeth, especially in the first 24 hours after cleaning. Some items to avoid include coffee, tea, and red wine.
Remember, regular dental checkups and cleanings are key to preventing dental issues and maintaining a healthy smile.
Common Misconceptions About Teeth Cleaning
Several misconceptions about teeth cleaning exist. One common myth is that teeth cleaning is optional if you brush and floss regularly. However, professional cleanings can remove plaque and tartar that regular brushing and flossing can’t.
Another misconception is that teeth cleaning can weaken your teeth. Cleaning strengthens your teeth by removing harmful bacteria and preventing decay.
Some people also believe teeth cleaning is painful. While some discomfort may occur, modern dental techniques and tools have made the process much more comfortable.
Remember, understanding the facts about teeth cleaning in Oshkosh, WI can help you make informed decisions about your oral health.

Sky was the most helpful dental hygienist I've ever had. She explained things before she started a new part of the cleaning. Told me what to expect and made the entire experience so comfortable for me. I don't have a lot of dentist anxiety, but I would recommend her for anyone that does. She went the extra mile to make sure I understood the process each step of the way. 10/10
I had a wonderful experience yesterday. I went in for a cleaning which was great. The hygienist was thorough and my experience was the best I’ve had in years. The dentist was friendly and professional and asked me about a previous appointment. She spent time needed to fix an ongoing issue for me. A top notch experience.
The whole staff at Midwest Dental Oshkosh North is fantastic. I have had regular cleanings at this office and also some more major dental work. From the front desk, to billing, hygienists, and the couple of Doctors I have had the pleasure of dealing with--- everyone has been wonderful. I have also found my favorite hygienist at this location--- Amy Bielak has always answered all my questions (even if I thought some might sound silly) and has also been so patient when I have been worried about a procedure. Thank you Amy and all the staff at Oshkosh North for taking such good care of me and my teeth.
Hands down one of the best dentists that I have ever been to. I hate the dentist and was worried about it for a while since I knew I needed work done. It was a fantastic experience from the moment I walked it. Everyone was extremely professional. One of the main reasons I hate the dentist is the judgement for not taking care of your teeth. This is a completely judgement free dentist. They do give it to you straight Tell you how to correct it, but don't make you feel bad for it. They were quick and courteous the entire time. The cleaning process was great and you get a free goodie bag to take care of your teeth at home.
A year ago I had a tooth extraction by the former dentist and have had gum sensitivity since. Tried all kinds of tooth paste for sensitive gums, with no relief. Upon my recent cleaning examination by Dr. John Machi, he discovered a root that was not extracted with the tooth. He was so kind and offered to remove at no charge since it was by the previous dentist at this practice. Upon removing the root, he found infection deeply embedded and since cleaning everything out - I am pain free for the first time in a year. Welcome Dr. Machi and thank you!
We have been with Midwest Dental for many years. We love the staff and always, ALWAYS have a great experience whether it's for a cleaning or other dental procedure. I highly recommend this branch on Ohio Street!
I have never been a huge fan of going to the dentist, and I was extremely nervous going in to this appointment because it had been such a long time. I was checked in and in the chair in no time. The staff made me feel comfortable right away. Dr. Olsen came in to the room before the exam even began just to chat. The dental hygienist always made what she was doing very explicit and kept me distracted and comfortable throughout the whole process. Because my teeth had such a large build-up, the cleaning process took quite a while. She was extraordinarily patient and cleaned my teeth very thoroughly. Dr. Olsen made his observations in a way that was easy to understand and laid out future options in a kind way. This was by far the best experience I have ever had in a dentist's office.
