Understanding Sedation Dentistry
Sedation dentistry, also known as “sleep dentistry,” uses sedatives to create a relaxed, easy, and calm state. It’s a solution for those who dread dental visits due to anxiety or fear.
Sedation can be administered in several ways, including oral sedation, intravenous (IV) sedation, and nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”). Each type of sedation serves a unique purpose and is used based on the patient’s needs and the nature of the dental procedure.
Some key points to understand about sedation dentistry include:
It’s used to manage patient’s fear and anxiety during dental procedures.
Sedation is safe when administered by qualified professionals.
It’s different from anesthesia, which causes a total loss of consciousness.
Patients under sedation are usually awake and can respond to commands, but feel relaxed and may not remember much about the procedure.

How to Choose a Sedation Dentist in Plymouth, WI

Preparing for Your Sedation Dentistry Appointment
Preparation is key for a successful sedation dentistry appointment. Your dentist will provide specific instructions based on the type of sedation used.
Typically, your dentist may ask you to fast for a certain period before the procedure. It’s also important to arrange for a responsible adult to accompany you, as you may be drowsy or disoriented post-procedure. Plus, they will need to drive you home from the procedure.
