Whether you’re a patient or just seeking knowledge about root canals near you, continue reading to learn more.
Understanding Root Canal Therapy
A root canal is a dental procedure that can save badly damaged or decayed teeth. Dentists often recommend them when the tooth’s pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels, becomes infected or damaged.
This infection can be caused by various factors, including deep decay, repeated dental procedures on the tooth, or a crack or chip in the tooth.
A root canal in Watertown, WI involves removing the infected or damaged pulp and then cleaning and disinfecting the inside of the tooth. After this, the dentist fills and seals the tooth.
Signs You May Need a Root Canal
Recognizing the signs that you may need a root canal in Watertown, WI is crucial. It allows for timely treatment, which can prevent further complications.
One common sign is severe tooth pain, especially when chewing or applying pressure. This pain may come and go, but it’s often intense.
Increased sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures is another sign. The sensitivity often lingers even after the temperature stimulus is removed.
Swollen, tender gums near the affected tooth can also indicate a need for a root canal. In some cases, a pimple-like abscess may form on the gums.
Lastly, tooth darkening or discoloration is a potential sign. This usually indicates issues with the tooth’s nerve or blood supply.
If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s important to consult your Midwest Dental dentist promptly. They can accurately diagnose the issue and recommend the best course of treatment.

The Root Canal Procedure in Watertown, WI
At Midwest Dental, only experienced dentists and endodontists perform root canals in Watertown, WI, using advanced technology and techniques to ensure a smooth process.
Before a dentist can determine you need a root canal, they must perform a thorough examination of the affected tooth. This often involves dental X-rays to assess the extent of the damage.
Once the dentist determines the only option to save the tooth is to perform a root canal, they will begin the procedure. Let’s review the steps of the typical root canal in Watertown, WI.
Step-by-Step Process
The dentist first creates an opening in the tooth with a small drill. Then, the dentist removes the infected or damaged pulp from the tooth using special dental instruments.
After removing the pulp, the dentist thoroughly cleans the inside of the tooth, helping eliminate any remaining bacteria.
The dentist then fills and seals the tooth to prevent future infection. Sometimes, the dentist may place a dental crown for added protection.
Finally, the dentist gives you thorough aftercare instructions to ensure a smooth recovery.
How Long Does a Root Canal Take?
The duration of a root canal in Watertown, WI can vary. It largely depends on the complexity of the case and the tooth involved.
On average, a root canal takes 30 minutes to 2 hours. However, more complex cases may require multiple visits.
It’s important to note that recovery time is also a factor. Most patients can resume normal activities within a few days.
However, it’s crucial to follow all aftercare instructions to ensure a successful recovery. This includes taking prescribed medications and avoiding certain foods and activities.
Root Canal Cost in Watertown, WI
The cost of a root canal near you can vary based on the complexity of the case and the tooth involved. Your Midwest Dental office is happy to give you a full cost breakdown after a consultation.
Factors Affecting Root Canal Costs
The main factor affecting the cost of a root canal in Watertown, WI is the complexity of the case. More complex cases require more time and resources, which can increase the cost.
The type of tooth involved can also affect the cost. For example, molars are typically more expensive to treat than front teeth.
Finally, the dentist’s experience and reputation can also influence the cost. More experienced dentists may charge higher fees, but they also tend to provide higher-quality care.
Insurance and Payment Options
Most dental insurance plans cover at least part of the cost of a root canal in Watertown, WI. However, the exact amount covered can vary depending on the plan.
It’s important to check with your insurance provider to understand what is covered. You should also ask your dentist about any out-of-pocket costs you may be responsible for.
At Midwest Dental, we accept most major dental insurance plans. We’d be happy to review your coverage and discuss the potential costs.
Midwest Dental also offers flexible payment plans that allow you to spread the cost over a few months. We also accept Care Credit financing and all major credit cards. This can make the cost of a root canal near you more manageable, especially if you don’t have insurance.
Pain Management After the Procedure
Root canals have a reputation for being painful, but with modern techniques and anesthesia, most patients experience little to no discomfort during the procedure.
Your dentist will use local anesthesia to numb the area, ensuring you won’t feel any pain during the root canal.
After the procedure, over-the-counter pain relievers are usually sufficient to manage any discomfort. Your dentist may also prescribe stronger pain medication if needed.
Aftercare and Recovery
It’s normal to experience some sensitivity in the treated area after a root canal. This is temporary and should subside within a few days.
It’s important to follow your dentist’s aftercare instructions. This usually includes avoiding hard or chewy foods until the treated tooth has fully recovered.
Regular dental checkups and good oral hygiene practices will help ensure a successful recovery and prevent future dental issues.

The staff at Midwest Dental are awesome from the moment I walk in until the moment I leave. Melissa is incredibly kind, attentive, understanding and gentle. For me it takes my dental experience to a higher level. Everyone there is welcoming and friendly. I think the new Dr is a great addition to this office. Before he was added to the staff, I was a bit unsure as I am fairly new there. The front office as well are very kind and attentive people. Thank you!

I have had a really good experience here with Dr. Joe and Jill. Years of dental neglect and avoiding the dentist finally caught up to me in December one evening when my disintegrating canine tooth abscessed and the right half of my face swelled up. Dr. Joe and Jill were able to squeeze me in and see me the next morning. They did a quick exam of all my teeth, they briefed me on the terrible shape my teeth were in, and they answered all my questions about the abscess. They were patient with me and very informative, especially since I had not been to a dentist in probably ten years. Jill walked me through, step-by-step, exactly what I needed to do to set up the oral surgery appointment in Johnson Creek to get my abscessed tooth pulled, which I really appreciated. I have had a handful of dental visits with Dr. Joe and Jill since then, and we have been working on fixing the rest of my teeth. ✨
