Dental Fillings
Dental health is a crucial aspect of overall well-being, yet many people overlook the importance of regular dental care.
One common dental procedure is a dental filling. It restores the function and appearance of teeth affected by decay or damage.
Dental fillings in West Bend, WI at Midwest Dental are a routine part of dental care. But what exactly is a dental filling? How much does a dental filling cost in West Bend, WI?
We’ll answer these questions and more while also exploring the types of dental fillings near you, the process of getting a filling, and more.
What Is a Dental Filling?
A dental filling is a common dental procedure used to repair teeth damaged by decay. The process involves removing the decayed tooth material, cleaning the affected area, and then filling the cleaned-out cavity with a filling material.
This filling material helps prevent further decay by closing off spaces where bacteria can enter. It also restores the tooth’s shape and function, allowing you to chew and speak normally.
Dentists offer several types of materials for dental fillings in West Bend, WI, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. These include amalgam, composite, gold, and ceramic fillings. The choice of material often depends on factors such as the extent of repair, allergies, and cost.
Signs You May Need a Dental Filling
Recognizing the signs that you may need a dental filling is crucial for timely treatment. Ignoring these signs can lead to more serious dental issues, including severe tooth decay, severe toothache, and tooth loss.
Common signs you might need a dental filling include:
Persistent toothache or spontaneous tooth pain
Sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods and drinks
Visible holes or pits in your teeth
Pain when biting down or chewing
Discoloration or white spots on your teeth
If you experience any of these symptoms, schedule a dental appointment at the Midwest Dental office near you as soon as possible. Our dentist can accurately diagnose the issue and determine whether a filling is the best course of treatment.
Remember, early detection and treatment of tooth decay can save your teeth and prevent more complex and costly dental procedures in the future.
Types of Dental Fillings in West Bend, WI
You’ll find a variety of dental filling materials available in West Bend, WI, and each type has its set of advantages and disadvantages. Your dentist will help you choose the best option based on your specific needs.
Amalgam Dental Fillings
Amalgam fillings, also known as silver fillings, are a common choice for dental fillings in West Bend, WI. They are durable and relatively inexpensive, but their silver color can be noticeable when you laugh or smile.
Composite Dental Fillings
Composite fillings, made from a mixture of plastic and fine glass particles, are another popular option. Your dentist can match them to the color of your teeth, making them a more visually pleasing choice. However, they may not last as long as other types of fillings.
Gold Fillings
Gold fillings are generally the most durable options, lasting over 15 years, but they’re also the most expensive.
Ceramic Fillings
Ceramic fillings, made of porcelain, are tooth-colored and resistant to staining. The downside is they can be as expensive as gold fillings.
Which Dental Filling Is Right for You?
Choosing the right type of dental filling depends on various factors, including the extent of repair, the location of the tooth, your insurance coverage, and personal preference. It’s important to discuss these factors with your dentist to make an informed decision.
The Process of Getting a Dental Filling in West Bend, WI
Getting a dental filling near you is straightforward and begins with examining your teeth. Your dentist will use a small mirror to check the surfaces of each tooth. They may also take dental X-rays to detect cavities between teeth.
If your dentist detects decay, they will numb the area around the tooth with a local anesthetic. They then remove the decayed portion of the tooth using a drill, air abrasion instrument, or laser. The choice of instrument depends on the extent of decay, the location of the tooth, and the dentist’s comfort level with the equipment.
After removing the decay, the dentist will prepare the space for the filling. Different types of fillings require different preparation techniques. Once the filling is in place, your dentist will finish and polish it. The entire process usually takes just one visit.
Understanding Dental Filling Costs in West Bend, WI
The cost of dental fillings near you can vary based on several factors, including the type of filling material used and the extent of the tooth decay. Your dentist will provide a detailed cost estimate after examining your teeth.
Dental insurance can also significantly reduce your out-of-pocket expenses, as it generally covers at least part of a dental filling in West Bend, WI. It’s always a good idea to discuss the cost with your dentist before the procedure.
At Midwest Dental in West Bend, WI, we’re always happy to review your insurance coverage and help you better understand your cost for getting a filling.

Imagine the anxiety of needing dental work following the retirement of the dentist you have gone to for 40+ years! Now imagine you go to a new dentist at the same location you are accustomed to. The receptionist greets you with a warm, welcoming smile, and in a few minutes you are both laughing about how most people dread dental appointments. The decor is noticeably changed from what you remember from visits years ago. And though you wonder what else has changed, you appreciate the more modern, clean, calming appearance of the place. The dental assistant is also friendly going over X-rays, explaining the procedure planned, and answering any questions in an easy to understand manner. The dentist comes in and immediately lessens any tension or worries with his personable wit, humor, charm, and friendly and calm manner. He calls you by your name, so you don't feel like just any random patient. They both work well together. You can tell there is mutual respect and a good working relationship. He gives some direction but is not bossy. He asks for her opinion as they work as a team. He also talks to you, so you don't feel you are just a project to work on. He induces calm and erased your anxiety, making you feel at ease to the point you realize there was no cause to worry or fear, as there was no pain. This was my reality- my true experience with Dr Buchanan at Midwest Dental this week. Only a mild discomfort when the novacaine was administered, and I barely felt it. At one point, he recognized my jaw was getting a little sore from having my mouth open, and he allowed me a few moments to massage it and rest with it closed. They worked quickly, but not rushed. I never felt like I was gagging on too many instruments or debris. My old fillings and a cracked newer one were drilled out and replaced and now feel even better than before. The new fillings were polished and feel smooth. The bite is perfect. No high spots or bumps or rough edges anymore. It feels like my natural teeth were never filled, and it looks nicer that the silver fillings are changed to match the teeth color too. Thank you so very much, Dr. Buchanan and staff! You are the best dentist I have seen since Kathy Roth retired! I definitely will refer my friends and family and recommend anyone looking for a dentist, schedule here! 😁
