Dental crowns help restore your natural tooth shape after damage or other dental issues.
Dental Crowns
Choosing the right dentist who performs dental crowns near you requires a lot of research. With numerous dental offices to choose from and all the different types of dental crowns , it’s essential to make an informed decision.
Dental crowns play a crucial role in restoring damaged teeth. They can improve the function and appearance of your teeth, but how do you know which dentist and crown type is right for you?
Below, we’ll provide you with the necessary information to make these important decisions about your dental health. We’ll explore what a dental crown is, the different types available, their respective costs, and how to find the right dental crown dentist.
What is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is a common dental procedure, but what is it exactly?
A dental crown is a cap that covers a damaged tooth and restores its shape, size, and strength. The crown fully encases the visible portion of the tooth and is cemented into place, providing a stable and durable solution for damaged teeth.
Dental crowns come in various materials, including porcelain, ceramic, metal, and composite resin. Each material has pros and cons. The choice often depends on the patient’s specific needs and preferences.
What’s a Dental Crown’s Role in Oral Health?
Dental crowns play a significant role in oral health, as they’re a solution for damaged or decayed teeth.
By covering the damaged tooth, a crown can prevent further decay. It can also protect the tooth from breakage. Dental crowns can also restore the function of the tooth. They allow for normal eating and speaking.
Additionally, crowns can improve the appearance of the tooth by covering up discoloration and misshapenness, enhancing your smile.
What Are the Types of Dental Crowns
Several types of dental crowns are available. The type you choose can depend on various factors, such as the tooth’s location, the color of the surrounding teeth, and the patient’s personal preference.
The most common types of dental crowns are made from the following materials:
Composite resin dental crowns: Composite crowns are great on a budget and can match your natural tooth color. However, they are the most fragile of all dental crowns .
Ceramic dental crowns: These crowns are the most economical of the group and are easy for your dentist to match with your natural tooth color. The downside is they are not as durable as other materials.
Porcelain dental crowns: Porcelain crowns or porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns can also match your natural teeth. Their big draw is that they are much more durable than ceramic crowns because they combine the great look of porcelain laid on top of metal. The downside is they are pricier than ceramic and may show a metal line near their base if your gums recede.
Metal dental crowns: These are made from gold, palladium, nickel, and chromium. While their color stands out, making them best suited outside your smile line, they offer great durability, making them excellent options for molars.
Your Midwest Dental dentist near you can help you determine which crown material and best for your situation and budget..
The Process of Getting a Dental Crown
Getting a dental crown involves several steps. The process begins with a consultation with a Midwest Dental dental professional so they can examine your teeth and determine if a dental crown is the best solution for you.
If the dentist recommends a dental crown, they will discuss the different types of crowns and help you choose the best material for your specific needs. The next step is the dental crown procedure itself. This involves preparing the tooth, taking impressions, and fitting the crown. After the procedure, proper aftercare and maintenance are crucial to ensure the longevity of your dental crown.
Consultation and Treatment Planning
The consultation is an important part of the process. It allows the dentist to assess your oral health, discuss your treatment options, and review the pros and cons of each type of dental crown.
The dentist will also provide a treatment plan, which outlines the steps involved in getting a dental crown.
The Dental Crown Procedure
Getting a dental crown usually involves two visits. The first visit is for tooth preparation and impression taking. During this visit, the dentist will reshape the tooth to make room for the crown and then then take an impression of the reshapened tooth.
The dentist sends the impression to a dental lab, which uses it to create a custom crown. The dentist will install a temporary crown to protect your tooth while waiting for the permanent crown to come from the lab.
During the second visit, the dentist will remove the temporary crown and fit and cement the permanent crown. They will ensure it fits properly and matches your other teeth.
Dental Crown Aftercare and Maintenance
After getting a dental crown, proper care is essential, including regular brushing and flossing. It’s also important to avoid hard foods, as these can damage the crown. Regular dental checkups are also crucial. These allow the dentist to monitor the condition of the crown and make any necessary adjustments.
Cost and Insurance Considerations for Dental Crowns
The cost of dental crowns near you, can vary based on several factors, including the type of crown and the dentist’s expertise. It’s important to get a detailed cost estimate before the procedure so you can plan your budget accordingly.
Understanding the Cost of Dental Crown Near You
The cost of a dental crown can range from several hundred to a few thousand dollars. The material of the crown is a major factor in the cost. Additional necessary procedures, like root canals, can also affect the cost. It’s important to discuss these potential costs with your dentist.
Remember, the cheapest option may not always be the best. Consider the longevity and quality of the crown when evaluating cost.
Insurance and Payment Options
Dental insurance often covers at least part of the cost of a dental crown . It’s important to check with your insurance provider to understand your coverage. You can also contact a Midwest Dental office near you, and we’d be happy to review your coverage with you.
If you’re uninsured, Midwest Dental still has options for you. First, we accept all major credit cards and CareCredit. We also offer financing options that allow you to spread the cost over a period of time.
There’s also the Midwest Dental Essential Smile Plan dental membership that can reduce the cost of certain procedures by 20-50%.

I had my 6 month cleaning and exam today, and as always Angie did a fabulous job cleaning my teeth. I love Dr. Bess the only down side is she doesnt do implants. I used Dr. Gray in the past for the implants and was seeing him when a cavity was found on a front tooth that needed fixed and a crown. After getting the crown I told them it was to short compared to my tooth on the otherside but they told me it looked fine. Well I wasn't happy about and when I returned I let Dr Gray know about it. He was very rude about it, and I will never see him again. So my next cleaning I asked for Dr Bess to be my dentist again. I told her why I didn't want to see Dr Gray ever again. She looked at it but unfortunately I have a small tooth and I risked losing the tooth if they took the crown off and redid it. I love Dr Bess and Angie Gerdes but are very professional and compassionate people. I give both of them a 5 star but no stars to Dr Gray.
I lost a crown on a front tooth, and they were not able to put it back on, so they gave me a very acceptable temporary tooth and made a referral for a permanent solution. This is not my usual dentist, but they recognized my distress and took care of me. I highly recommend Midwest Dental.
I was staying in New Lisbon while on vacation from out of state and unfortunately chipped my crown. I called Midwest Dental and they were able to squeeze me in to take a look at the chipped crown. Everyone was so nice from the receptionist, to Laura (chair side) and Dr. Simmons. I’m so glad I found MIdwest Dental - Dr. Simmons gave me peace of mind that the repair can wait until I get home and they would send the X-rays to my regular dentist. I highly recommend this practice and if I lived here I would definitely have them as my permanent dentist!! Thank you for great service!
So phenomenal, I broke a tooth on July 20th, they got me in the next day to look at it, and the day after that put a temporary crown on. I am so impressed with their services, it was a front tooth as well!!!!
I’ve been looking for a dental office for a while because I had two cracked teeth. I’m so glad I found Midwest Dental! From the moment I walked in, I felt welcomed and comfortable. Dr. Riley took the time to examine my teeth and came up with a treatment plan right away.
We decided that crowns were the best option to restore my cracked teeth, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. My smile looks and feels amazing! Thank you, Dr. Riley and the entire team at Midwest Dental, for making the experience so easy and comfortable. I truly appreciate your care!
I've been with this dentistry for years. They have good front desk staff for appointments and helpful email and text reminders if you want them. I've always been treated well by the dental hygienists. There's a good atmosphere to the place. I've gotten fillings, a root canal, crowns, and even a tooth extraction from this location. Yes I know I should take better care of my teeth. The tooth extraction was an emergency and they managed to get me in on very short notice. Crisis averted. It's a good place, my dental work holds up. I feel safe going to this one.
My family has been going to Midwest Dental for several years and have always been very satisfied with the treatment we receive. Everything from 6-month check-ups and cleanings to crowns, Dr Rota and her team are excellent. A special shout--out to Daniqua who is very knowledgeable, and, like Dr Rota, she is kind and compassionate. The office staff is friendly and always greet us with professional courtesy.
I’m well into my second decade of going to Midwest Dental - EC Oakwood and highly recommend them. Everyone from check-in to my favorite hygienist and doctor are friendly and helpful and it feels like I’m visiting friends twice a year. On the rare occasion I needed emergent help with a crown the specialized staff were also wonderful. I joke I love to go to the dentist but it’s really because of who I see and that they take great care of me and my smile.
