Understanding Wisdom Teeth and the Need for Removal
Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last teeth to emerge. They usually appear between the ages of 17 and 25.
Sometimes, these teeth can cause problems, as they may not have enough room to grow properly. This can lead to pain, infection, or other dental issues. In such cases, wisdom teeth removal becomes necessary. Fortunately, it is a common procedure we perform regularly at Midwest Dental.
Some common reasons wisdom teeth may need to be removed:
They’re impacted, meaning they’re trapped in your jaw or gums.
They come in at the wrong angle, pressing against your other teeth.
Your mouth isn’t big enough to make space for them.
They have cavities or gum disease you can’t reach with a toothbrush or floss.
Understanding the need for wisdom teeth removal is the first step toward a healthier smile.
Signs You May Need Wisdom Teeth Removal
Knowing when to consider wisdom teeth removal is crucial because timely removal helps prevent potential dental issues. Some common signs include pain at the back of your mouth, where the wisdom teeth are located.
You may also experience swelling, redness, or tenderness in the gums, which are signs of infection.
If you notice these symptoms, consult your Midwest Dental office immediately. Ourdentists will assess your condition and advise the best course of action.
Choosing the Right Dental Professional
Choosing the right dental professional is key to a smooth wisdom teeth removal process. When choosing your dental professional for wisdom teeth removal near you, consider their experience and patient reviews. This will give you an idea of their expertise.
Also, check if they offer sedation options. This is important for your comfort during the procedure if you struggle with anxiety at the dentist.
Lastly, ensure they provide comprehensive post-operative care. This is crucial for a smooth recovery.
Fortunately for you, Midwest Dental has all these bases covered, so you already know the best dentist for wisdom teeth removal near you.
The Wisdom Teeth Removal Procedure
The wisdom teeth removal procedure is straightforward and begins with a consultation and examination. Your Midwest Dental dentist will assess the position of your wisdom teeth and check for any potential complications.
Next, the dentist will administer local anesthesia or sedation. This ensures you are comfortable during the procedure.
The dentist then makes an incision in the gum to expose the tooth and bone. The dentist then removes the wisdom tooth — if it’s difficult to extract, they may remove it in pieces — cleans the area where the tooth was, and stitches the incision.
Finally, the dentist sends you home with specific aftercare instructions. Following these will aid your recovery and prevent infection.
Preparing for Your Wisdom Teeth Removal
Preparation is key for a smooth wisdom teeth removal. It starts with understanding the procedure.
Your dentist will provide detailed pre-op instructions to guide you on what to do before the surgery.
Some general pre-op tips to follow include:
Avoid eating or drinking for 6-8 hours before the procedure.
Arrange for someone to drive you home post-surgery.
Wear comfortable clothing on the day of the procedure.
Following these tips can help ensure a successful surgery and recovery.
Anesthesia and Sedation Options for Wisdom Teeth Removal Near You
Your comfort is our top priority during wisdom teeth removal, and Midwest Dental offers anesthesia and sedation options to ensure this.
Our dentists usually use local anesthesia during this procedure. This option numbs only the area around the wisdom teeth. The key benefit is that it generally does not impact your ability to drive or return to most normal activities after the procedure.
For those with dental anxiety, our sedation option may be a good fit. This ranges from mild sedatives that simply relax you to general anesthesia that puts you to sleep for the procedure. While these can make the procedure more comfortable, they generally come at an extra cost and you’ll need someone to drive you home. Also, you should stay home from work and take it easy for the day.
Your dentist will discuss these options with you. The choice will depend on your comfort level and the complexity of the procedure.
Wisdom Teeth Removal Cost
The cost of wisdom teeth removal near you can vary based on several factors. The factors to consider include the complexity of the extraction, the type of anesthesia, and the dentist’s experience.
For an accurate quote, consult with your local Midwest Dental office.
Insurance Coverage for Wisdom Teeth Removal
In most cases, commercial dental insurance will cover at least some of the cost of extracting your wisdom teeth. The exact coverage depends on your carrier, so contact them or give your local Midwest Dental office a call so we can review your coverage for you.
Options Without Insurance
If you lack dental insurance, you still have options other than a complete payment upfront. First, Midwest Dental accepts all major credit cards. We also offer in-house financing to allow you to spread out the cost over a few months. Alternatively, we also accept Care Credit financing.
After the Extraction: Wisdom Teeth Removal Recovery
Recovery after wisdom teeth removal is a crucial phase typically lasting a few days to a week. During this time, you may experience some swelling and discomfort. This is normal, and you can manage it with prescribed pain medication or over-the-counter medication.
Some tips for a smooth recovery include:
Rest and avoid strenuous activities for the first few days.
Apply an ice pack to your face to reduce swelling.
Rinse your mouth with warm salt water after meals to keep the extraction site clean.
Avoid tobacco and alcohol, as they can delay healing.
Remember, everyone’s recovery process is different. Always follow your dentist’s specific instructions for the best results.
What to Eat After Wisdom Teeth Removal
After wisdom teeth removal , your diet should be soft and easy to chew. This helps to avoid irritation and promotes healing.
Some great options to eat during recovery include:
Mashed potatoes
Yogurt
Smoothies
Soups
Scrambled eggs
Remember, avoid hot foods and drinks until the numbness wears off. Also, steer clear of hard, crunchy, or spicy foods for a few days.
Potential Complications and How to Avoid Them
Wisdom teeth removal is generally safe. However, like any surgery, it carries some risks.
Common complications include dry socket and infection. Dry socket occurs when a blood clot fails to form in the hole left by the tooth, or if the blood clot breaks off or dissolves too soon.
To avoid these complications, follow your dentist’s post-operative instructions. This may include avoiding smoking or using straws, keeping the area clean, and taking prescribed medications as directed.

Had my wisdom tooth removed yesterday. Was in and out in about a hour. It took less than 10 minutes to have my wisdom tooth removed. Today is the day after my removal and I'm almost pain free without painkillers. I'm extremely happy with the results. The speed and care was top tier! 10/10 reccomend! I'll be using Midwest dental and hopefully have doctor gray again for me and my daughter!
I don't think it's possible for my experience to have gone any better. From being greeted warmly, to the care the nurses showed, to the awesome "bedside manner" of the dentist I was put at ease, made to feel important, and given full instructions for the care I was to do at home. And the very best part, they extracted a wisdom tooth and I was in no pain during the procedure, nor at home afterwards. A little expected tenderness, but I was able to enjoy the rest of my day after the extraction. We are very blessed to have them here in Rolla.
I have always had bad experiences with dentists. That is not the case here. Dr. Made sure I was comfortable before starting. Even talked over some of my bad experiences and helped me feel at ease. I had to have my wisdom tooth removed, and it was the first time that it was completely painless for me. The staff is very professional and friendly. And the pricing was very reasonable. My family and I will be returning.
I was originally referred by a friend to Dr. Mcbride ended up seeing Dr. Teahann. She reffered me for wisdom tooth removal with Dr. Stein and came back today to start my dental journey with her. It's a very busy place i had an a amzing time with the dental assistant who was friendly and very professional. The doc reviewed my xrays and came up with a plan then i had cleaning done by her and the dental hygenist. I was so worried about the pain and what would happen today but everybody talk me through every thing step by step the dental hygenist was a 10/10 very encouraging educative and now i understand a good dental plan to maintain the amazing work they do. I recommend any one new to the area to check them out. Very professional and the music was also 10/10 you will know when you are laying there scared of dental work and the back ground music is just calming.
Went in today after not being to the dentist in a while. First off, they contacted me and got me in within 2 weeks of inquiry which was amazing. I showed up today a little early and was seen almost right away. Super nice staff and to the point. They made it simple and easy. Thank you all for giving me a great experience today! I was given referrals for wisdom teeth extraction and that location reached out to me before I was even down the street from the office. They really give you the information and make it easy! Highly recommend!
As always, Midwest Dental went out of its way to deal with a difficult tooth repair this morning. Dr. Rosales took as much time as he needed for the repair of a wisdom tooth, and didn't question my choice to keep it. He was thorough in his work and respectful of my choice, and very personable as well. I highly recommend Midwest Dental.
