Root canals often trigger anxiety, but today's technology makes them virtually painless.
Root Canal Treatment
Root canal therapy is a common dental procedure. Yet, it often raises many questions and concerns.
Are you considering a root canal and wondering what you’re in store for? Below, we’ll provide comprehensive information about root canals. We’ll discuss the process, duration, and cost of a root canal.
Whether you’re a patient or just seeking knowledge about root canals near you, continue reading to learn more.
Understanding Root Canal Therapy
A root canal is a dental procedure that can save badly damaged or decayed teeth. Dentists often recommend them when the tooth’s pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels, becomes infected or damaged.
This infection can be caused by various factors, including deep decay, repeated dental procedures on the tooth, or a crack or chip in the tooth.
A root canal involves removing the infected or damaged pulp and then cleaning and disinfecting the inside of the tooth. After this, the dentist fills and seals the tooth.
Signs You May Need a Root Canal
Recognizing the signs that you may need a root canal is crucial. It allows for timely treatment, which can prevent further complications.
One common sign is severe tooth pain, especially when chewing or applying pressure. This pain may come and go, but it’s often intense.
Increased sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures is another sign. The sensitivity often lingers even after the temperature stimulus is removed.
Swollen, tender gums near the affected tooth can also indicate a need for a root canal. In some cases, a pimple-like abscess may form on the gums.
Lastly, tooth darkening or discoloration is a potential sign. This usually indicates issues with the tooth’s nerve or blood supply.
If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s important to consult your Midwest Dental dentist promptly. They can accurately diagnose the issue and recommend the best course of treatment.

The Root Canal Procedure
At Midwest Dental, only experienced dentists and endodontists perform root canals, using advanced technology and techniques to ensure a smooth process.
Before a dentist can determine you need a root canal, they must perform a thorough examination of the affected tooth. This often involves dental X-rays to assess the extent of the damage.
Once the dentist determines the only option to save the tooth is to perform a root canal, they will begin the procedure. Let’s review the steps of the typical root canal .
Step-by-Step Process
The dentist first creates an opening in the tooth with a small drill. Then, the dentist removes the infected or damaged pulp from the tooth using special dental instruments.
After removing the pulp, the dentist thoroughly cleans the inside of the tooth, helping eliminate any remaining bacteria.
The dentist then fills and seals the tooth to prevent future infection. Sometimes, the dentist may place a dental crown for added protection.
Finally, the dentist gives you thorough aftercare instructions to ensure a smooth recovery.
How Long Does a Root Canal Take?
The duration of a root canal can vary. It largely depends on the complexity of the case and the tooth involved.
On average, a root canal takes 30 minutes to 2 hours. However, more complex cases may require multiple visits.
It’s important to note that recovery time is also a factor. Most patients can resume normal activities within a few days.
However, it’s crucial to follow all aftercare instructions to ensure a successful recovery. This includes taking prescribed medications and avoiding certain foods and activities.
Root Canal Cost
The cost of a root canal near you can vary based on the complexity of the case and the tooth involved. Your Midwest Dental office is happy to give you a full cost breakdown after a consultation.
Factors Affecting Root Canal Costs
The main factor affecting the cost of a root canal is the complexity of the case. More complex cases require more time and resources, which can increase the cost.
The type of tooth involved can also affect the cost. For example, molars are typically more expensive to treat than front teeth.
Finally, the dentist’s experience and reputation can also influence the cost. More experienced dentists may charge higher fees, but they also tend to provide higher-quality care.
Insurance and Payment Options
Most dental insurance plans cover at least part of the cost of a root canal. However, the exact amount covered can vary depending on the plan.
It’s important to check with your insurance provider to understand what is covered. You should also ask your dentist about any out-of-pocket costs you may be responsible for.
At Midwest Dental, we accept most major dental insurance plans. We’d be happy to review your coverage and discuss the potential costs.
Midwest Dental also offers flexible payment plans that allow you to spread the cost over a few months. We also accept Care Credit financing and all major credit cards. This can make the cost of a root canal near you more manageable, especially if you don’t have insurance.
Pain Management After the Procedure
Root canals have a reputation for being painful, but with modern techniques and anesthesia, most patients experience little to no discomfort during the procedure.
Your dentist will use local anesthesia to numb the area, ensuring you won’t feel any pain during the root canal.
After the procedure, over-the-counter pain relievers are usually sufficient to manage any discomfort. Your dentist may also prescribe stronger pain medication if needed.
Aftercare and Recovery
It’s normal to experience some sensitivity in the treated area after a root canal. This is temporary and should subside within a few days.
It’s important to follow your dentist’s aftercare instructions. This usually includes avoiding hard or chewy foods until the treated tooth has fully recovered.
Regular dental checkups and good oral hygiene practices will help ensure a successful recovery and prevent future dental issues.
Choosing the Right Dental Care Provider
Choosing the right dental care provider is crucial for a successful root canal. You want to find a reputable clinic , with experienced endodontists.
Consider factors like the clinic’s technology, patient reviews, and the dentist’s approach to patient care. A good provider will prioritize patient comfort and education.

My hubs had to get a root canal done by mary and then his crown fitting and crown by Ron. And he raved about both of them. How nice they were and how efficient. He was worried bc hes heard horror stories from friends about root canals and how much pain and swelling he would have. He said they both got him all good and numbed up and he didn't feel a thing either time and no pain afterwards. They did an amazing job and are super friendly!!!!5⭐️

But it was Anything to the contrary. It was painless, relatively fast, and I may have nodded off a bit while I was being worked on and the staff were professional with extremely good personalities.

Both my wife and I had our first appointments at Midwest Dental in Deerfield yesterday. Anyone who has seen my reviews would know I’m not given to positive hyperbole nor negative reviews purely for vindictiveness. We could not have had a better experience with this new dental office, including with the dentist, Dr. Bloomer.
We were greeted professionally and warmly, and given the paperwork that all new patients must complete. When this was done, we were each taken back by our hygienist for a thorough first visit. Each step was accomplished brilliantly. I won’t detail them because we all know what we go through on that first appointment. For me, the cleaning is very important. It surprises me that some people don’t look forward to them. She got my teeth totally clean in a way that was neither painful nor intrusive. I couldn’t be happier with the result.
The exam by Dr. Bloomer was thorough, professional and the consultation with him about a possible root canal I needed the last few months was informative and has me confident that I’m taking the right course of action to have it treated.
Bottom line, wherever you live in the Madison metropolitan area, it is worth a drive to Deerfield to have your dental care provided by these fine people we could not recommend them more highly.
