The Secret to Keeping Your New Year’s Resolutions

Everybody knows that Rome wasn’t built in a day, but making small changes over time eventually adds up to huge results! As we set our New Year’s resolutions, we should remind ourselves that goals are an important part of our growth and personal development. Despite our best intentions though, most of us quickly abandon New Year’s resolutions after a couple of weeks. What are we doing wrong?

Often the goals are too lofty, overwhelming, or vague; and most resolutions only address one aspect of life. Instead of hyper-focusing on this one aspect, try to create a motto for the year that is applicable to several parts of your life! Setting a New Year’s resolution that has multiple meanings will increase the likelihood of keeping it throughout the year. The best resolutions will not only help break bad habits but will also set the stage for a healthier you, too! Here are a few mottos we’ve come up with:

Be your own boss! Take charge in your life. Create an environment for yourself based on integrity and respect. Respecting yourself means caring about yourself and creating a stellar routine for your oral health is a great start. For example, by your next dental appointment you could hold the title of floss boss when you tell your dental hygienist the great news that you’ve been flossing regularly!

Straighten up! This motto is applicable to so many areas in life; are you sitting up straight at your desk? Could your home use some tidying and decluttering? Has your dentist been recommending an orthodontic consult to address your crooked teeth? There’s no time like the present to start straightening things up in your life, even your teeth.

Smiles for everyone! Smiles have the power to affect not only our own attitude, but the mindsets of those around us. Consider starting the New Year with a win-win mindset. A mindset where everyone wins! Research has shown that smiles are contagious, but unfortunately, so are frowns – so be mindful of which you pass around!

There’s nothing like the clean slate of a new year because it comes with 365 fresh opportunities to make a change for the better. Creating a New Year’s resolution with multiple meanings is one way to make improvements in several areas of your life. So, take it one day at a time and don’t be too hard on yourself. Every step, no matter how small, is a step in the right direction.
